  • It has been six months since Malungs Elnät added dInsight Analytic Platform from cleantech company Dlaboratory Sweden AB (publ) to increase the grid’s resilience. With the new data analytics tool installed in substation MA in Malung, Malungs Elnät is aiming to reduce incidents and outages. So, what have we learned?

The switchgear and the protection equipment in the substation where the system is installed is of higher age. The substation is feeding a grid consisting of both underground cables in the central parts of Malung and overhead lines in more rural areas. The cables were considered the most important parts of the grid to monitor, since they are old and oil-paper insulated.
Another reason is to be able to monitor the relay protection system to make sure it is working as desired.

dInsight Analytics Platform is based on unique patented algorithms, automatically analyzing deviations in primary substations. Harnessing this data, operations can make faster fault detection, and get early warnings for imminent faults. This enables not only efficient operations but allows also for proactive maintenance work.

Thanks to dInsight Analytic platform, Malung has already been able to identify some incidents in their system:

    • Cable fault, dLabs solution could easily calculate approximately the location of the fault
    • Earth fault caused by a tree that had fallen over an overhead line

    – Our primary ambition when installing the dLab solution was to supervise the cable grid feeding central parts of Malung, and with the system we have been able to detect and even approximately locate cable faults. Due to the benefits, we have seen, we have taken the first steps implementing the use of the analysis results in our organization. The staff that are on call duty receive messages from the system and we are currently training a wider part of the personnel in using the system, says Stefan Jansson, Operations and Grid manager at Malungs Elnät.

    – We are very happy that Malung is satisfied with the system, and that our algorithms can help them in their day-to-day work. Our ambition from a technology perspective is to make sure the analytics is accessible for different parts of an organization paving the way for a more data-driven way of working says Fredrik Akke, CTO at dLab.

  • Utility company Vimmerby Energi & Miljö AB introduced dInsight Analytics Platform from Dlaboratory Sweden AB (publ) in their entire grid in 2019. Since, dLab’s solution has helped the company to keep track of incidents in the power distribution – from the overlaying grid, in their own grid and even in the customers’ facilities. The commissioning of dQuality 3.0 means that Vimmerby Energi now takes yet another step towards their goal to streamline the entire chain for increase operational reliability and cost efficiency.

dLab’s application dQuality is a solution tracking grid power quality and registering deviations. In order to keep the power quality standards required in Europe, monitoring grid power quality is necessary.

Higher precision in the registrations, a more user-friendly interface, and the possibility to cross reference grid incidents with power quality deviations are some of the improved features of dQuality 3.0. All in all, dQuality is a simple to use and cost-efficient tool for tracking grid power quality; monitoring and analyzing factors such as overtones, frequency stability, flicker, voltage changes etc., irregularities can be quickly identified and managed

dQuality 3.0 can be viewed in dLab’s visualization platform dInsight. User friendly graphs and diagrams makes power quality monitoring in dInsight easy. The possibility to cross reference incident registrations in dInsight and irregularities in dQuality makes it possible to do extensive root cause analyses.

Vimmerby Energi & Miljö AB has since 2019 kept track of all incidents in their grids via dLabs dAnalyzer. Among benefits they receive early warnings of upcoming faults that enables a pro active maintenance to be able to fix faults before an outage appears. These early warnings mostly appears in the form of high ohmic earth faults and earth faults and can for example be a sign of aging components, bad cable joints and other upcoming problems that dLab uniquley detects with their patented algorithm.

-Now Vimmerby adds dQuality to also follow the power quality in their grid. Power quality disturbances is another form of distubance that could for example be a load or solar panels that generate non wanted overtones. The solution then could for example be adding a filter to suppress the overtones, says Fredrik Akke, CTO of dLab.

  • We are happy to announce that our journey with Dala Energi takes yet another important step!

The product dAnalyzer Lite from cleantech company Dlaboratory Sweden AB (dLab), are being integrated to one more station, Lindan.

Dala Energi’s business concept is to offer solutions in energy and digital communication that help people and companies live and develop in our countryside in an easy, efficient, and sustainable way and dLab is happy to support Dala Energi in realizing their mission.

dLab’s dInsight Analytics Platform provides a decision support system including a broad set of features and services. One of these features is dAnalyzer, collecting grid data from its minimal hardware, completely independent of age and make, including high-resolution sensors. The data is analyzed and put into meaningful context through a web-based interface; thereby enabling proactive fault detection as well as proactive maintenance.

In modern substations equipped with digital protection relays including fault recorders, but not yet equipped with the hardware from dLab, dAnalyzer Lite is an efficient solution. By using disturbance recordings in Comtrade file format and combining the existing recorded data chronologically from one or several fault recorders, dAnalyzer Lite can perform an instant detailed incident analysis.

    – dAnalyzer Lite provides an excellent value in situations where you have the means collecting relay protection data from a station. We provide the analytics, and those responsible for analysing grid data today will have the possibility to evaluate a bigger picture instead. The first installation of dAnalyzer Lite at Dala Energi was completed earlier this year and we are very happy about this extension, and recognition.”, says Henrik Winberg, COO at dLab.

  • It´s going to get better. As it gets better, more cleantech companies like dLab will incorporate it into their system. As they do, their system will operate more effectively, and we will move even faster towards the sustainable future we aim for. This is what dLab believes!

dLab also believe in supporting the sustainable society of tomorrow by offering an intelligent platform for the energy sector.

By providing visual analytics and enabling data-driven decision-making, the possibilities are opened for a modernized way of working and a more resilient power grid.

How does dLab use AI to gain further insight to their data?

Earlier this year, we conducted a study where we with the help of so-called unsupervised machine learning tried to find clusters of patterns in a large set of our recorded data. The results were very promising, and to further develop our solution dLab is now launching an AI initiative, beginning with the development of a number of proof-of-concepts to test hypotheses that our engineers have put forth.

Our platform analyzes thousands of recordings each week, and a large number of these are categorized as a “registration” (a “registration” in dLab-terms is the lowest level of severity). These registrations in themselves currently does not provide as much useful insights to the customer as an actual disturbance does, but there may be patterns to detect from them, nonetheless.

Also, although we take much pride in how much detailed information our algorithms provide in case of a disturbance (feeder(s) affected, type of incident and key values such as maximum rms-values to mention a few), we believe these recordings might hide even more interesting tidbits, such as what the actual cause of the fault was.

For example, we have seen indications that certain component failures in the grid manifest as specific patterns in the waveforms of the measured voltages. Currently, our solution correctly identifies and categorizes these incidents as either overcurrents, earth faults, etc., but with machine learning, we could potentially do better. These indications that we have observed could be proven (or where applicable, and perhaps just as important, disproven) and even more correlations between waveform patterns and fault causes could be found. We just will not know until we embark on this endeavour.

“It is our conviction that this is a field worth investigating more”, says dLab’s CTO Fredrik Akke. “Of course, we must not abandon the more traditional approach of advanced signal processing, but by complementing our well-tried and powerful algorithms with Machine Learning and statistical analysis, I believe truly interesting results can be achieved”.

The additional information and knowledge the answers to these questions can provide would further enable our customers to take another step towards becoming a truly modern grid operator where they don’t just react to situations but are able to plan ahead and work more proactively.
