  • Dlaboratory Sweden AB (publ) provides a powerful platform for collecting, analyzing, and contextualizing grid data. Every day the platform records thousands of deviations that are further processed and analyzed by the dInsight Analytics Platform.

Thanks to both the sensitive and high-resolution measurement, even the smallest ripple in current and voltage waveforms are recorded. These registered data are further classified individually to one of a set of defined categories, where some are disregarded as minor disturbances without individual significant value and hence unclassified. However, all data including these unclassified ripples has always been stored for future purposes.

Today, these ripples have proved to be very important in dLab’s next endeavors towards the perfected grid insight.

In September 2021 dLab announced an ongoing machine learning initiative: Do you understand the beauty of AI? | dLab (dlaboratory.com) and today we can proudly give an interesting little insight into results of one of these proof-of-concept projects.

By applying machine learning algorithms on so called time series including both classified and unclassified data, patterns not visible to either the human eye or advanced signal processing have been detected. The results strongly indicate a possibility to with high accuracy automatically predict serious faults hours in advance when taking theses previously unclassified data into account.

So, what implications could this have for your supply quality?

  • Dlaboratory Sweden AB (publ) releases a new dashboard in dInsight that further strengthen the grid operator’s possibility for a transparent and accurate understanding of the load flows.

The ongoing energy transition calls for new solutions and the challenges for grid operators have never been greater. The transition to a more renewable energy system requires a stable and modern power grid to be able to handle locally produced electricity, more residential buildings, electric vehicles, the establishment of energy-intensive industries and the phasing out of fossil energy sources.

The way forward is to use new smart technology to monitor the power flow and power quality which is something cleantech company dLab provides through dInsight Analytics Platform, addressing power quality, security of supply and capacity.

Now dLab introduces an enhanced power quality dashboard in dInsight for visualizing current values on all feeders. All feeders are compiled in a table at the top of the screen with information about maximum- average-, and minimum values for a selected time period. With this high quality data  that is easy accessible and clearly presented, it is easy to both see  which feeders are subject to high load in the short run and to forecast the need of actions to improve grid capacity more accurate than relying on flat-rate-data.

To find out more about this new dashboard please visit our webpage and select Tutorials under the Learn menu. There you will find a short film that demonstrates these new enhanced dashboards.

  • Dlaboratory Sweden AB (publ) is announcing a patent-pending method for quantifying health status of a power grid. The ongoing energy transition is a fact and intermittent production, and consumption is increasing. The growing number of solar power installations and electrical cars that needs charging means increased challenges for grid operators. It has never been as important as now to have full control over your power grid system and the way forward is the use of smart grid technologies.

The method developed by dLab aggregates disturbances seamlessly from individual power lines to a single KPI that describes the health of the entire power grid, a sharper and more versatile tool compared to current practice. In the everyday life of the grid operators this means knowing were in the grid investments are needed, being able to plan maintenance activities more effectively and work proactively supporting the energy transition.

  • Dlaboratory Sweden AB (publ) provides a solution that can significantly help distribution system operators in avoiding disconnection issues that originates from displacement voltages.

In a power grid, protection relays are critical components which are supposed to detect and disconnect faulty feeders. Unfortunately, they do not detect all faults. For example, the relay protection systems can be incorrectly configured or not sensitive enough for certain intermittent earth faults, why a faulty feeder may not be disconnected in a proper way leading to a high displacement voltage tripping the whole substation. The problem of unselective tripping is a hot topic of discussion and, among others, Vattenfall has drawn attention to the problem in a thesis which can be read here: FULLTEXT01.pdf (diva-portal.org  (In Swedish)

dLab solution to unselective tripping is called dProtection which can be described as a dAnalyzer on-the-edge with the ability to send digital signals and thus commanding the circuit breakers directly, or indirectly via the protection relays, to operate. With dLab’s patented algorithm for detecting directional and intermittent earth faults, dProtection ensures that only the faulty feeder is disconnected in case of a fault, and not the entire busbar.

  • It has been six months since Malungs Elnät added dInsight Analytic Platform from cleantech company Dlaboratory Sweden AB (publ) to increase the grid’s resilience. With the new data analytics tool installed in substation MA in Malung, Malungs Elnät is aiming to reduce incidents and outages. So, what have we learned?

The switchgear and the protection equipment in the substation where the system is installed is of higher age. The substation is feeding a grid consisting of both underground cables in the central parts of Malung and overhead lines in more rural areas. The cables were considered the most important parts of the grid to monitor, since they are old and oil-paper insulated.
Another reason is to be able to monitor the relay protection system to make sure it is working as desired.

dInsight Analytics Platform is based on unique patented algorithms, automatically analyzing deviations in primary substations. Harnessing this data, operations can make faster fault detection, and get early warnings for imminent faults. This enables not only efficient operations but allows also for proactive maintenance work.

Thanks to dInsight Analytic platform, Malung has already been able to identify some incidents in their system:

    • Cable fault, dLabs solution could easily calculate approximately the location of the fault
    • Earth fault caused by a tree that had fallen over an overhead line

    – Our primary ambition when installing the dLab solution was to supervise the cable grid feeding central parts of Malung, and with the system we have been able to detect and even approximately locate cable faults. Due to the benefits, we have seen, we have taken the first steps implementing the use of the analysis results in our organization. The staff that are on call duty receive messages from the system and we are currently training a wider part of the personnel in using the system, says Stefan Jansson, Operations and Grid manager at Malungs Elnät.

    – We are very happy that Malung is satisfied with the system, and that our algorithms can help them in their day-to-day work. Our ambition from a technology perspective is to make sure the analytics is accessible for different parts of an organization paving the way for a more data-driven way of working says Fredrik Akke, CTO at dLab.

  • Utility company Vimmerby Energi & Miljö AB introduced dInsight Analytics Platform from Dlaboratory Sweden AB (publ) in their entire grid in 2019. Since, dLab’s solution has helped the company to keep track of incidents in the power distribution – from the overlaying grid, in their own grid and even in the customers’ facilities. The commissioning of dQuality 3.0 means that Vimmerby Energi now takes yet another step towards their goal to streamline the entire chain for increase operational reliability and cost efficiency.

dLab’s application dQuality is a solution tracking grid power quality and registering deviations. In order to keep the power quality standards required in Europe, monitoring grid power quality is necessary.

Higher precision in the registrations, a more user-friendly interface, and the possibility to cross reference grid incidents with power quality deviations are some of the improved features of dQuality 3.0. All in all, dQuality is a simple to use and cost-efficient tool for tracking grid power quality; monitoring and analyzing factors such as overtones, frequency stability, flicker, voltage changes etc., irregularities can be quickly identified and managed

dQuality 3.0 can be viewed in dLab’s visualization platform dInsight. User friendly graphs and diagrams makes power quality monitoring in dInsight easy. The possibility to cross reference incident registrations in dInsight and irregularities in dQuality makes it possible to do extensive root cause analyses.

Vimmerby Energi & Miljö AB has since 2019 kept track of all incidents in their grids via dLabs dAnalyzer. Among benefits they receive early warnings of upcoming faults that enables a pro active maintenance to be able to fix faults before an outage appears. These early warnings mostly appears in the form of high ohmic earth faults and earth faults and can for example be a sign of aging components, bad cable joints and other upcoming problems that dLab uniquley detects with their patented algorithm.

-Now Vimmerby adds dQuality to also follow the power quality in their grid. Power quality disturbances is another form of distubance that could for example be a load or solar panels that generate non wanted overtones. The solution then could for example be adding a filter to suppress the overtones, says Fredrik Akke, CTO of dLab.
